QB1 players train anytime, anywhere, under any conditions. The rain
did
not deter more than 50 quarterbacks and wide receivers from getting
better at the QB1 QB-WR Training Day
at Spartanburg High School this past Saturday afternooon.
The latest stop for the QB1 QB-WR TRAINING DAYS proved to be a success,
despite mother nature's attempt at shutting things down with a steady
rain throughout the afternoon. More than 50 quarterbacks, wide
receivers, running backs, and tight ends got in the best three-hour
workout on the planet available to their positions, and everyone of
them got better. Here are some bullett notes about the camp.
QUARTERBACKS
SHINE THROUGH THE CHALLENGING WEATHER
Daniel Thompson, QB, Boiling Springs
HS (2015) - I've had Daniel in camps since he was a rising
freshman and I have yet to see him and not be more impressed than I was
the previous outting. He constantly improves and it is glaringly
evident that he works hard in his own time to improve and refine his
skills. He's got excellent footwork and his mechanics are near
flawless. A quick release with a nice throwing motion combined with
very good arm strength give him the ability to throw the entire route
tree with lethal accuracy. He has gone from just being my No. 1
quarterback for the 2015 class to one of my top three quarterbacks
overall in the state. He's gotten one Division II offer simply because
Newberry College wanted to be the first one in, but this is a Division
I level player. The lone question mark for recruiters will be his
height (5'11 1/2 barefoot) but he's still got growing to do and every
single season, guys this size are proving to be excellent quarterbacks
at the BCS level and beyond.
Austin Scott, QB, Spartanburg HS (2016)
- This was the first time I've laid eyes on Scott and he made a very
good first impression on myself and staff. He's got a very good, solid,
6-0 frame for a freshman. He's got very good footwork in position
agilities, was a very quick study in position skills and pocket
presence drills, and throws the ball well, with a smooth throwing
motion. At times he had a slightly high release, but his accuracy was
very sharp. His arm strength is adequate and is going to get stronger
as he physically matures. I have not seen film on him yet but from what
I have seen, I like him as a strong player in the 2016 class. He is
also the son of a coach, so he has a strong cerebral side to his game.
Cody Lapole, QB, Spartanburg HS (2015)
- Lapole worked well in the skills drills but was not one that jumped
out at us until we got to the second and third session where they threw
the ball. He surprised me with his arm strength and was very accurate
on his throws to the receivers. At times he doesn't follow through with
his throws but he has tremendous potential and is one of those players
that was a "pleasant surprise" in camp.
Cameron Fouch, QB, T.L. Hanna (2015)
- Very coachable player who is a very quick study. He was very good in
position agilities, showing good footwork and the ability to move in a
pocket. He threw the ball well in the second session and in the third
hour with the receivers, was very accurate on his throws. He doesn't
have the most powerful arm but was able to get the ball to the targets
and I believe he will mature more physically and see some strength as
that happens. Overall, he was definitely in the top five slingers in
the camp.

Colin Sneed, QB, Hillcrest HS (2016)
- Another impressive freshman in the group, this kid is going to
develop into a very good player. He showed good footwork in session
one's agilities but where he really caught our attention was in session
two in position skills and in session three throwing to receivers. He's
got very good arm strength for a young player and a smooth throwing
motion. Like a lot of young quarterbacks, he doesn't always follow
through on his throws, but that will come with development and
refinement of the skills. I was impressed with him and felt he was one
of the better quarterbacks in camp and certainly worth mention among
the top five.
Other quarterbacks who caught our eyes were Broome's
style="font-weight: bold;">Nate Mathis (2015), and BHP's
style="font-weight: bold;">Austin Estes (2016), and
style="font-weight: bold;">Dylan Spence (2015). Estes has been
to several QB1 Training Days and I've seen great improvement from our
first camp to where he is at now. Jackson
Williamsnon (2017) of T.L. Hanna,
style="font-weight: bold;">Thompson Rudolph (McCracken), and
style="font-weight: bold;">Jake Mathis (2018) of Broome were
three middle schoolers who were impressive in the young group.
WIDE RECEIVERS GOT STRONG AS DAY WENT
ON
There is no doubting that it was a tough day early on for the wide
receivers. As the rain fell, they were challenge in agilities to
maintain their body control and learn how to make those cuts and
transition even when the conditions are not perfect. There was some
slipping and sliding but once they realized not to skate through the
drills and focus on control, they got better. By the time the third
session was underway, they were catching everything thrown.
I felt there were two receivers who really stood out above the others
in all three phases of the camp. Boiling Springs tight end Colin Reed
(2015) and T.L. Hanna wide receiver Whit Miller (2014) really separated
themselves from the pack with their performances. This is the third
camp we've been able to see Reed in and he has gotten better each time
out. While he plays TE for the Bulldogs, he has the skill set of a wide
receiver and can line up in the slot or wide. He's very good at
sticking his foot in the ground and transitioning and has excellent
hands.
Miller, a rising senior for the Jackets, suffered an arm injury that
limited him as a junior. But he was outstanding in camp, blowing up the
agilities even in the rain and making it look easy. He runs very crisp
patters and shows very good body control in his routes. Like Reed, he
has excellent hands and I think he'll be a huge assett to the Jackets
sin 2013.

Boiling Springs' wide receiver Jason Hill (2015) is another player who
has been to multiple QB1 Training Days and QB1 receiver coach Robert
Wells commented on the vast improvement that he saw in Hill from the
first time we saw him to this weekend. He's always done well in
agilities but he really stepped up in his route running and his
catching this weekend and was easily one of the top targets in camp in
the third phase. As a matter of fact, we ended the camp on a long post
thrownby teammate Daniel Thompson, which he easily hauled in to end
camp on a positive note.
Their was a large group of receivers from Spartanburg, ranging from 8th
grade to 11th grade but the one who stood out to me was 2014's Marvin
Black and Derek Brannon. Black is a track guy and was very smooth
running his routes and could be an assett to the Vikings with some
development of his hands. Brannon was a back up quarterback last season
but will be playing some tight end and slot for the Vikings in 2013 and
was impressive working out at his new positions.
Byrnes 2016 wide receiver Chavis Dawkins looked good in agilities and
skills, and even better in the third phase of performance with the
quarerbacks. He's going to be a nice addition to the Rebels' arsenal of
weapons in the future.
