SCVARSITY INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS
Here is how we at SCVARSITY see the individuals in the state. And much like the rankings in the big states, we are ranking wrestlers based on their individual ability and not the size of their school. Please also note that not all of the wrestlers have been seen by SCVARSITY, so we have to go on the results that we know about. If someone has beaten one of the ranked wrestlers, let us know so that we can decide if that person deserves to be ranked. Please let us know any information about wrestlers who are at different weight classes by posting it on the message board.

103- Well things at 103 are pretty much the same. Brandon Goen from Byrnes deserves mentioning because he is wrestling tough. He will have a chance to earn his way into the rankings in recent weeks when he wrestle Plyler and Jackson. Gainey makes the big jump in the rankings after his consitant performance this season. At the top spot, Young and Johnson will wrestle Wednesday night, Jan. 16th, to decide who the favorite is. Chris Wood from Gaffney and Kyle Nygren from Lexington were tough kids who have quit wrestling and were dropped from the rankings.
1. Anthony Young- Summerville
2. Zach Johnson- Battery Creek
3. Matt Firtko- Dutchfork
4. Jay Gainey- Chesterfield
5. Chris Jackson- Rock Hill
6. Cong Capp- Eastside
7. Brad Robinson- Spring Valley
8. Matt Pyler- Northwestern
9. David Cotoe- Lugoff-Elgin
10. Ian Barker- North Myrtle Beach
112- Things at 112 stay almost the same. Freshman Cody Galloway from Northwestern enters the rankings after his win over Cofield from Lexington in their dual match. We missed a big chance to see Pollock and Dority wrestle at the Bearcat but the weather cost us several quality matches. Pollock was winning in the Hornet Hiliday Classic finals when he was caught on his back and pinned. That tournament is very tough and he appeared to be the man in the field!
1. Clyde Pollock- Dutchfork
2. Robbie Dority- Greer
3. Darice Livingston- Goose Creek
4. Adrain Davis- Chester
5. Donte Isaac- Cheraw
6. Jake Fordham- Fort Mill
7. A.J. Ruiz- Fort Dorchester
8. Cody Galloway- Northwestern
9. Roderick Wright- Rock Hill
10. Tyler LaPrad- Summerville
119- This weight class stays almost the same. Manross beat Rayfield pretty bad at the Fort Dorchester Duals. Cloonan is going to be very tough to beat. He appears to be sucked down pretty good to 119, so if the weight can not be a problem, he is definitely the favorite to win the title this year. Eazel from Swansea has dropped down from 125 and should battle with Rayfield for the 2-A spot.
1. Ryan Cloonan- Byrnes-
2. Gerald Turner- Summerville-
3. Kyle Kimrey- Dutchfork-
4. Adam Takach- Hilton Head-
5. Anthony Manross- Irmo-
6. Brandon Rayfield- Chesterfield-
7. Antonio Knox- Northwestern-
8. Dee Templeton- Fort Mill-
9. Maurice Eazel- Swansea-
10. Adam Ewoldsen- Eastside-
125- Again the cancellation of the Bearcat left us without a quality match between Anderson and Ellis. We do know that Ellis was winning in the Hornet Hiliday Classic Finals when he was reverse with five seconds left. Bessinger and Corwin move into the rankings at this weight after dropping down from 130. This quickly has become the best weight class in the state from 4-A to 1-A. Gambrell from Crescent is a two time placer and moves into the rankings for the first time.
1. Mike Ellis- Dutchfork-
2. Jeff Anderson- BHP-
3. Anthony Corwin- Fort Dorchester
4. Adam Bessinger- Battery Creek
5. Shane Morris- Seneca-
6. Cole Wilson- Byrnes-
7. Riley Galloway- Northwestern-
8. Jamey Smith- Irmo-
9. Carey Gambrell- Crescent-
10. Kyle Marchin- Fort Mill-
130- Again, this one changes little. Just some shuffling of guys who we thought were either down at 125 or up at 135. J.J. Davis from Byrnes is probably the best freshman in the state this season. When you see this kid compete you will realize that this kid has as much talent as any freshman in the state!
1. Keith Richardson- York-
2. Al Jones- Irmo-
3. Marcus Canipe- Chesterfield-
4. Joe Wickenhofer- Summerville-
5. J.J. Davis- Byrnes
6. Jayvon Jackson- Greer
7. Salon Staley- Swansea-
8. Michael Phelps- Lexington-
9. Charles Bagurin- Bishop England
10. Matt Mclane- West-Oak
135- This weight class is very solid, and the word is that Mario Bria is dropping to 130 and Piper is coming down to 135. If that happens, this would really be a great 4-A battle for the state title. We all wish we could have seen Selke and Brockington wrestle in the Bearcat, but again the weather cost us a chance to see two studs meet up.
1. Watch Brockington- Lake City-
2. T.J. Selke- Dutchfork-
3. Kyle White- T.L. Hanna-
4. Julious Frederick- Lugoff-Elgin
5. Brad Dawson- Lexington-
6. Theo Meryanos- Carolina Forest-
7. Mario Bria- Hilton Head-
8. Curtis Graham- Battery Creek-
9. Paul Ballenger- Byrnes-
10. David Tucker- Cheraw-
140- King beat Nassar 2-1 in the dual. Piper beat Nassar 3-2 up at the Chapel Hill Holiday Classic. King beat Riley 4-3 and 10-5. What great wrestling from guys who have seen each other during the season. Hinton from Chester should also not be overlooked. He has talent size and strength.
1. Andy King- Fort Mill-
2. Abdel Nassar- Byrnes-
3. Alex Piper- Hilton Head-
4. Terrell Riley- Summerville-
5. Ryan Reedy- Lexington-
6. Carlos Hinton- Chester-
7. Jason Mathews- Carolina Forest-
8. Brian Yates- Fort Dorchester-
9. Scott Canipe- Chesterfield
10. Neil Merrit- Eastside-
145- Powell is the man at this weight still. Word is that Apponte from Hillcrest may drop to 140, so that would make things here very wild open. Caleb Wilkes from Lexington was removed from the rankings after tearing his knee up. We hope him a speedy recovery.
1. Robbie Powell- Byrnes-
2. Jonathon Brown- Swansea-
3. Jonathon Baker- Lugoff-Elgin
4. Christian Apponte- Hillcrest-
5. Chris Newton- Hilton Head-
6. Darren Smith- Berkley-
7. Alex Houston- Chester-
8. Jason Starnes- Rock Hill-
9. Will Gainey- Chesterfield-
10. Evan Ward- Crescent-
152- Capocciama defeated Sunkins in the finals of the Lowcountry Tournament last weekend. He is a very tough wrestler and obly a sophomore. Personally we thought that Sunkins would be too powerful for anyone to handle, but obviously we were wrong. Also, look for Neitz to drop down to 145 this weekend and compete for a state title there.
1. Caleb Capocciama- Stratford-
2. Mike Sunkins- Hilton Head-
3. Randy Nazionale- Ridgeview-
4. Jonathon Bragg- Summerville-
5. Derek Neitz- Spring Valley-
6. Matt Jovanelly- Dutchfork-
7. Rory Garnett- Brookland-Cayce-
8. Chris Stryker- Seneca-
9. Sammy Robinson- Cheraw-
10. Desmond Burgess- Lake City-
160- Poynter is 21-0 with 20 pins and four outstanding wrestler trophies. I really don’t think there is much left to say about this weight class. Caldwell from Byrnes did match up and beat Albers 4-2 in their dual match. Brown from Battery Creek moves up as he has jumped out this year and dominated in winning the Taco Bell and Lowcountry Tournaments. Gathers from Summerville may be the biggest 160 pounder to have ever set foot on the mat.
1. Brent Poynter- Eastside-
2. Eric Lambert- Dutchfork-
3. Jermaine Herrington- Cheraw-
4. Rico Lewis- Loris-
5. Kenny Brown- Battery Creek-
6. Sharon Gothers- Summerville
7. Vinson Good- Seneca-
8. Daniel Caldwell- Byrnes-
9. Craig Albers- Fort Mill-
10. Todd Cottrell- Lexington-
171- Suttles from Byrnes and Boykin from BE make it into the rankings this week. Robertson from DF went to the Hornet Hoilday Classic and lost in the finals in double overtime. Also one to watch out for is Bean from Startford who is very very tough.
1. Careef Robertson- Dutchfork-
2. Jeff Mixon- Edisto
3. Darius Caldwell- Swansea-
4. Jack Bean- Stratford-
5. Frank Brockington- Lake City-
6. Whit Sowards- Irmo-
7. Will Kuhn- Spring Valley-
8. Michael Boykin- Bishop England
9. Josh Suttles- Byrnes-
10. Josh Sabath- Fort Mill-
189- No changes here except for Harris moving in. He currently owns wins over Miller and Pittman. Valek from Irmo is still the head of this class as he continue to roll through the state.
1. Parker Valek- Irmo-
2. Jada Ross- Summerville-
3. Tyler Harris- Riverside-
4. Anthony Miller- Byrnes

7. T.C. Wilson- Airport-
8. Michael Grase- Rock Hill-
9. Justin Pittman- Eastside-
10. Darren Vaughn- BHP-
215- Leone finally lost a match up in Virginia, but he is still the man to beat down here in South Carolina. Word is flying around that Langenfield from Berkley is eligible this semester, but he will not be able to get his weight down in time to certify. Again, that is just the word we here at SCVARSITY hear, but it has not been confirmed.
1. Nick Leone- Dutchfork-
2. Quinton Robinson- Lake City-
3. Jess Bowers- Walhalla-
4. Keith Medlin- Lugoff-Elgin-

7. Mike Powell- Airport-
8. Shannon McKnight- Berkley-
9. Will Singleton- Swansea-
10. Antonio Fleming- Blue Ridge-
275- Fry has this weekend to make weight or he moves off the list. The last we heard was that he took his final football visit on January 5th and should be ready to wrestle this semester. If he doesn’t make weight this week, he won’t be able to certify. Everything in this weight stays the same, but Hudson and Briggman should meet up ths weekend for a third time.
1. Dustin Fry- Summerville-
2. Chris Reyes- Berkley
