This past Friday night, Demetris Summers, the 6-1, 205lbs tailback from Lexington High School, proved once again that he is a runningback to behold, rushing 315 yards in only ten carries and scoring six touchdowns as the Wildcats dismantled South Aiken 75-19.
In the process Summers tied Derrick Watson's State Record for career touchdowns at 88 ... well, unofficially that is. You see, Derrick Watson's stats haven't been reported to the SCHSL, who does keep some tabs on the state records. The owner of the state record according to their statistics is Mike Dingle of Berkeley (1984-86) with 78 touchdowns. So according to their books, Demetris is actually the State Record holder with his 88 touchdowns.
But everyone knows what Derrick Watson accomplished while he was in high school ... we all know his stats -- even if they weren't reported to the SCHSL.
"It's difficult for us to keep up with," said Drew Nix, of the SCHSL. "We've made it simple for the coaches to report, but we can only go by the stats we actually receive from the coaches."
The SCHSL does have a form that coaches can fill out that will give information needed to update the record books. Coaches can contact them at 803798-0120, FAX: 803-731-9679, or Email: schsl@schsl.org
In the mean time, in the eyes of all that keep up with South Carolina high school football, Demetris will share the record with Derrick Watson ... at least until Thursday night when the Wildcats travel to Airport to try to knock off the Eagles and maybe claim sole ownership of the state record for career touchdowns.
