SCVarsity Wrestling - Individual Rankings 1/23/02
103- Well we mentioned last week that Brandon Goen from Byrnes deserved to be ranked and would have a chance to prove it this week. Well this past week he knocked off Plyler and Jackson and has taken over as the leading man in the Upper state race. Firtko did defeat Goen 4-0. Also moving up is Ian Barker. This young man looked tough at the Dreher Invitational and is now the favorite in the 3-A ranks. One other name that could be in the race at this weight is Justin Nierode of Hilton Head. He won the Dreher Invitational with a solid win over Johnson, but word around the state is that he did not make scratch weight and may have to go back up to 112. We dont know yet, so we will hold off on his ranking. 1. Anthony Young- Summerville 2. Zach Johnson- Battery Creek 3. Matt Firtko- Dutchfork 4. Jay Gainey- Chesterfield 5. Brandon Goen- Byrnes 6. Chris Jackson- Rock Hill 7. Ian Barker- North Myrtle Beach 8. Cong Capp- Eastside 9. Brad Robinson- Spring Valley 10. Matt Pyler- Northwestern 112- This is such a great weight class around the state and the best part is that most of these guys have wrestled one another in tournaments. Holden from Riverside pinned Dority from Greer in the Greenville County finals, so that threw the rankings into a loop. Fordham from Fort Mill knocked off Davis from Chester after losing to him earlier in the season. And of course the biggest news in this weight is that Anthony Manross from Irmo has dropped down and owns a close win over Fordham at the Lexington Duals. The only thing that remains the same is the man at the top, Clyde Pollock. 1. Clyde Pollock- Dutchfork 2. Anthony Manross- Irmo 3. Darice Livingston- Goose Creek 4. Donte Isaac- Cheraw 5. Jake Fordham- Fort Mill 6. Adrian Davis- Chester 7. A.J. Ruiz- Fort Dorchester 8. Robby Dority- Greer- 9. Cody Galloway- Northwestern 10. Josh Caulder- Carolina Forest- 119- Well the word around is that the match between Kimrey and Cloonan on Monday night was a real battle. Not many people thought that Kimrey would be able to survive after jumping up two weight classes, but he is certainly taking control of a very tough weight class. Turner stays at #2 in the rankings because he beat Kimrey in their only other meeting. However, Kimrey takes the top spot because he seems to be wrestling better than anyone in the state right now. 1. Kyle Kimrey- Dutchfork- 2. Gerald Turner- Summerville- 3. Ryan Cloonan- Byrnes- 4. Adam Takach- Hilton Head- 5. Brandon Rayfield- Chesterfield- 6. Antonio Knox- Northwestern- 7. Mike Price- North Myrtle Beach- 8. Maurice Eazel- Swansea- 9. Charlie Tomberlain- York- 10. Dee Templeton- Fort Mill- 125- This is a great weight class also. Ellis handled Cole Wilson with ease 7-1 on Monday night, so it does not look like anyone will be able to challenge Ellis in the near future. Bessenger from Battery Creek is always dangerous, and Corwin could be the man who could get good enough by the end of February to hang with Ellis. As for 3-A, it doesnt even look close between Anderson and the rest of the field. 1. Mike Ellis- Dutchfork- 2. Jeff Anderson- BHP- 3. Anthony Corwin- Fort Dorchester 4. Adam Bessinger- Battery Creek 5. Cole Wilson- Byrnes- 6. Riley Galloway- Northwestern- 7. Jamey Clark- Irmo- 8. Carey Gambrell- Crescent- 9. Kyle Marchin- Fort Mill- 10. Justin Arthur- Broome 130- Richardson still is the man in this weight class, but Jones from Irmo is very impressive. This young man never looks like he is great, until you look at the score and he is winning 10-2 or 14-3 and it is only the second period. It looks as if this is one weight class where the best three wrestlers are in separate divisions, so that means we will not have a chance to see which one is truly the best 130 pounder in the state. So we will just keep ranking on what we see and their production. You could see Mario Bria from Hilton Head in the weight class like he was at the Dreher Invitational, but again the word is that he did not make scratch weight and will have to go back up to 135 or higher. 1. Keith Richardson- York- 2. Al Jones- Irmo- 3. Marcus Canipe- Chesterfield- 4. Shane Morris- Seneca- 5. Joe Wickenhofer- Summerville- 6. J.J. Davis- Byrnes 7. Bennie Isaac- Dreher- 8. Omar Heyward- Berkley 9. Brad Dawson- Lexington- 10. Charles Bagurin- Bishop England 135- This is a weight class that has had a lot of turnover throughout the season, and this weeks rankings are no different. Several new faces appear in these rankings. As we mentioned before, Bria from Hilton Head could be moving down to 130, which would mean Alex Piper from Hilton Head would drop into this weight class. Selke defeated Ballenger 3-1 on Monday night. J.D. Teague from Rock Hill was a state qualifier two years ago and appears to be back on track this season after missing the state tournament last year. 1. Watch Brockington- Lake City- 2. T.J. Selke- Dutchfork- 3. Kyle White- T.L. Hanna- 4. Paul Ballenger- Byrnes- 5. Julious Frederick- Lugoff-Elgin- 6. Curtis Graham- Battery Creek- 7. Tim Sexton- Pickens- 8. John David Teague- Rock Hill- 9. Michael Phelps- Lexington- 10. Mario Bria- Hilton Head- 140- King, Hinton, and Canipe all appear to be the favorites to win their weight classes at the state tournament this season. Word is that Andy King is starting to wrestle much like he did last season when he was completely dominating. Piper may drop to 135. And dont count out Meryanos from Carolina Forest in the 3-A race. 1. Andy King- Fort Mill- 2. Abdel Nassar- Byrnes- 3. Alex Piper- Hilton Head- 4. Terrell Riley- Summerville- 5. Ryan Reedy- Lexington- 6. Carlos Hinton- Chester- 7. Theo Meryanos- Carolina Forest- 8. Brian Yates- Fort Dorchester- 9. Scott Canipe- Chesterfield 10. Evan Ward- Crescent- 145- Neitz has dropped down to this weight class and appears to have set up a rematch from last seasons state finals with Robbie Powell. Apponte from Hillcrest has wrestled much of the season at 140, but the word around the state is that he will stay at 145 for the state qualifying tournaments. He has wrestled Powell tough in the past. Newton from Hilton Head could be the best in the lower state, but he will have to continue to improve to hold off tough wrestlers like Smith from Berkley. Baker from Lugoff should have no problem winning his second title after last seasons disappointing finish. 1. Robbie Powell- Byrnes- 2. Derek Neitz- Spring Valley- 3. Jonathon Brown- Swansea- 4. Jonathon Baker- Lugoff-Elgin 5. Christian Apponte- Hillcrest- 6. Chris Newton- Hilton Head- 7. Darren Smith- Berkley- 8. Chris Stryker- Seneca- 9. Jason Starnes- Rock Hill- 10. Will Gainey- Chesterfield- 152- Now this weight class could be a battle to the end. The top four wrestlers are all capable of beating one another for the 4-A title. It should be an exciting race for the top spot. The 3-A and 2-A weights are filled with tough guys, so it is tough to see who could come out on top. Robinson from Cheraw has looked very tough lately, as has Chapman from Irmo. Tyler Adams from Spring Valley moves into the rankings after his pin of Sunkins in the Dreher Invitational Quarterfinals. Who knows if he could do it again, but he wrestled tough and was in the match when it happened. Another kid to watch here is Dreher's sophomore Michael Hood. 1. Caleb Capocciama- Stratford- 2. Mike Sunkins- Hilton Head- 3. Randy Nazionale- Ridgeview- 4. Jonathon Bragg- Summerville- 5. Rory Garnett- Brookland-Cayce- 6. Sammy Robinson- Cheraw- 7. Frank Taylor- Ninety-Six- 8. Desmond Burgess- Lake City- 9. Joe Chapman- Irmo- 10. Tyler Adams- Spring Valley- 160- This weight class stays the same as far as the individuals are concerned. Gathers from Summerville drops a bit after his loss to Greene from Beaufort in their dual match. Brown defeated Albers in the semi-finals at Dreher 3-2. This weight class is very balances from 2-10, but the #1 spot continues to be Brent Poynter who picked up his fifth outstanding wrestler trophy at the Greenville County Tournament. 1. Brent Poynter- Eastside- 2. Eric Lambert- Dutchfork- 3. Jermaine Herrington- Cheraw- 4. Rico Lewis- Loris- 5. Kenny Brown- Battery Creek- 6. Vinson Good- Seneca- 7. Daniel Caldwell- Byrnes- 8. Sharon Gothers- Summerville- 9. Craig Albers- Fort Mill- 10. Todd Cottrell- Lexington- 171- Careef Robertson from DF continues to separate himself from the rest of the field. He could have a challenge from Bean from Stratford, but that would be unlikely. Caldwell and Mixon are setting up to be an outstanding finals match in the lower state and state in 2-A. Crawford from Eastside moves into the rankings after winning the Greenville County Invitational. Brandon Brown of Crescent is unbeaten at this weight class, and 2-2 at 189, and is beating on the door of this weight class's rankings as well. 1. Careef Robertson- Dutchfork- 2. Jeff Mixon- Edisto 3. Darius Caldwell- Swansea- 4. Jack Bean- Stratford- 5. Frank Brockington- Lake City- 6. Whit Sowards- Irmo- 7. Will Kuhn- Spring Valley- 8. Michael Boykin- Bishop England 9. Josh Suttles- Byrnes- 10. Matt Crawford- Eastside- 189-. This weight class has had some serious movement over the past two weeks. A match between Harris and Valek would be great, but it will not happen in this state this year! Stevens from Stratford moves up to the 3 spot after his victory over Ross of Summerville. Lambert soundly defeated Miller from Byrnes by a score of 11-1. Wilson from Airport also came out on top over Brussert in the finals of the Dreher Invitational. 1. Parker Valek- Irmo- 2. Tyler Harris- Riverside- 3. Jeremy Stevens- Stratford- 4. Jada Ross- Summerville- 5. Aaron Lambert- Dutchfork 6. T.C. Wilson- Airport 7. Anthony Miller- Byrnes 8. Zach Brussert- Spring Valley- 9. Justin Pittman- Eastside- 10. Darren Vaughn- BHP- 215- Leone is still the class of 215. No one seems to be even close to his dominance around the state. Bowers from Walhalla will have his hands full with Windham of Swansea. Windham looked tough in winning the Dreher Invitational with a convincing win over Powell. 1. Nick Leone- Dutchfork- 2. Quinton Robinson- Lake City- 3. Jess Bowers- Walhalla- 4. Keith Medlin- Lugoff-Elgin- 5. Matt Hill- Irmo- 6. Steve Windham- Swansea 7. Dodd Smith- Socastee- 8. Mike Powell- Airport- 9. Shannon McKnight- Berkley- 10. Antonio Fleming- Blue Ridge- 275- Nothing changes much at this weight class. Fry is finally out and wrestling for Summerville. Hudson from B-C finally got a win over Briggman in the Dreher finals. Those are the only two that changed spots. It should be mentioned that Taylor from White Knoll is very tough and could surprise people in 3-A. 1. Dustin Fry- Summerville- 2. Chris Reyes- Berkley 3. Chris Woods- Irmo- 4. Hudson- Brookland-Cayce- 5. Matt Briggman- Swansea 6. Fred Mills- Lancaster- 7. Brett Porterfield- Spring Valley- 8. Marquis Ruff- Ninety-Six 9. Chad Land- Chester- 10. David Schupp- Myrtle Beach- |
