is doing everything he can to make sure coaches and recruiters know about him, but the
6-0, 179lbs signal caller doesn't have them beating down the door - yet. But those things
could change as more of the coaches are seeing his video and getting a look at him in
person as he continues taking unofficial visits this Spring. SCVarsity.com spoke to
Garrett about his two stops this weekend and his thoughts on those schools.
"Both visits were great," said Jones. "I went to North Carolina (UNC)
Saturday morning and had a chance to meet with the coaches and tour the facilities. It was
a lot different - better - than I had expected. The facilities were awesome - everything
is contained in one area for the football players - study hall, cafateria - you never have
to leave the complex, really."
The Tarheels signed Spring Valley quarterback B.J. Phillips in this year's recruiting
class, but according to Jones, that is not a concern that he nor the staff has in terms of
how it will affect their recruiting of him.
"There's always a possibility they could look at B.J. at another position,"
said Jones, "but regardless, they didn't seem to think that was going to affect the
way they looked at me."
Jones was also impressed with one of the current Tarheel quarterbacks who is competing
for the starting job.
"He was very cool guy," Jones said. "We talked alot and I told him I was
a little worried because people seemed to question my size and he told me not to worry
about that. He said if I could get the job done, it didn't matter whether I was 6-0 or
6-4. He was also  in the study hall doing school work which impressed me...that he
was there on a Saturday working on his studies because academics is important to me."
Jones also went to Duke this weekend and took in their Spring game, coming away
impressed with them, as well.
"The weather was kind of bad, so I was surprised they got the game in," he
said. "But it was a good visit, too. The coaches said I was on their list and they
had already evaluated my film, but they don't talk to the players about it until they've
evaluated everyone on their list."
Between the two, who did Jones like the best? "North Carolina," he said.
"I don't know, there was just something about that place that I liked. Duke was great
too, but of the two, I liked North Carolina."
A few weeks ago, Jones visited Valdosta State, Western Carolina, and East Carolina.
Jones, who led the Panthers to the Class AA State Championship in 2005,  has no
offers right now, but feels that a couple of the schools he has visited seemed pretty
serious about their interest in him.
"I want to play DI," said Jones. "I mean, everyone should want that to
be their goal. But I'm not going to turn down playing for an education at a smaller school
if that doesn't work out. I'm not going to be one of those guys that's ego is too big to
take advantage of a blessing."
SCVarsity.com will keep you updated on the progress and recruiting of this outstanding
player.
