A year after a disappointing 31-14 loss to Lake View in the A state championship, Lamar knew it would need to score more points to beat Baptist Hill and its high-octane offense.

And score the Silver Foxes did.

In fact, in a 74-46 win, Lamar’s offense scored touchdowns on its first 10 drives.

At halftime, the Silver Foxes led 53-30, capped by two touchdowns in the final 20 seconds, one off a fumbled kickoff, one of five Baptist Hill turnovers on the night.

Ultimately though, the difference in this one may have been the Lamar defensive line. Facing one of the top quarterbacks in the state in Corey Fields, the Silver Foxes could not let the senior beat them.

The defensive line stepped up to the task. After allowing 22 points in the first quarter, the SIlver Foxes began spying Fields and the line began to rush the passer without fearing his legs.

Fields got his, running for 83 yards and going 20-34 for 335 yards and five touchdowns.

Leading just 24-22 after the first quarter, Lamar went on a 50-8 run over the next two-plus quarters to put the game out of hand.

Baptist Hill fought back, scoring twice through the air in the final seven minutes, far too little too late.

Lamar’s running game was unstoppable, led by junior JaQuez Lucas and senior Tyrik Herion, who combined for 469 yards and seven rushing touchdowns on 34 carries, an average of 13.8 yards a rush.

“It was awesome,” head coach Corey Fountain said of his running game. “But the offensive line, the backs, they blocked for each other like they haven’t blocked all year. We said we were gonna have to do that.”

Late in the first half, Lucas added a 28-yard touchdown receptions, one of just three catches for the SIlver Foxes, all of which went for touchdowns.

With the win, the Silver Foxes capped a perfect season, winning their second title in three years and fifth since 2002.

Quotable:

“We couldn’t get bogged down and have to punt to them. At any time they can score. The score ended up that way because if you put your second-string in at all, they’re gonna score on you; and then they’re gonna score some more. So we had to slow it down and pound the rock.” — Corey Fountain
