HOOPS: State championship game results

High school teams around the state were crowned over the weekend as the SCHSL basketball championships took place at Colonial Life Arena.

Following is a look at the results from Friday and Saturday.


Keenan's girls basketball team kicked off the action by knocking off Mullins by a final score of 51-28 to capture the 2A title. Jadimond Hickman paced Keenan with 18 points and Keenan forced 36 turnovers by Mullins. Jen'Lea Nichols had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Mullins.

Dion Bethea's Gray Collegiate Squad captured its first state title, beating Carvers Bay in the 2A classification by a final score of 58-45. Tommy Bruner had 20 points and Micheal Marsh added 15 rebounds in the effort. Stephon Greene had 12 points and 12 rebounds in the Carvers Bay effort.

Spring Valley was next to win a title, beating Wade Hampton to win the championship in the girls 5A division. 49-37 was the final, with Taylor Lewis scoring 18 points with 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals in the contest. Bre Watts had 16 points and 5 rebounds for Wade Hampton.

Dorman, led by sophomore guard Myles Tate's 20 points, defeated Irmo to capture the 5A boys title. Irmo's Winston Hill contributed 13 points in the runner-up effort.

Eighth grader Talaysia Cooper paced East Clarendon in the 1A final on Saturday morning, helping the Wolverines to a 55-31 win over Timmonsville. Makyla Commander finished with 8 points for Timmonsville in the runner-up effort.

Hemingway's JuJu Williams, also a Division I caliber football prospect, scored 21 to lead his team to the 1A boys championship in a 71-59 win over Ridge Spring-Monetta. Jerry Tyler had 20 for Ridge Spring-Monetta.

Newberry defeated Ridgeland-Hardeeville by a score of 57-50 to capture the girls 3A state title. Diamond Davis led the way with 18, while Quanajia Drayton scored 17 for Ridgeland-Hardeeville.

Southside beat Ridgeland-Hardeeville on the boys side in 3A, with a 74-58 victory. RJ Campbell had 20 points for Southside, while Ridgeland-Hardeeville's Devin Butler added a team-high 20.

North Augusta beat Wilson 52-34 to win the class 4A title on the girls side; Amari Young had 13 points and 17 rebounds for North Augusta while Loyal McQueen added 10 for Wilson.

Ridge View beat Wilson 74-70 to capture the 4A boys state title in the nightcap on Saturday. Ridge View was led by Crosby Harris-James' 20 points and Walyn Napper had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Wilson's Alex Caldwell was the game high scorer with 30 points.
